More than two years ago, Sandy Neerman, director of Greensboro Public Libraries; Betsy Grant, the recently retired director at the Greensboro Children’s Museum; and I had coffee together to discuss a creative idea for a fundraiser — to do one together.

It was a novel idea, one that took little convincing. Thus, Three-G was conceived.

The hardest part is to help your kid — without helping too much.

With three daughters — ages 19, 16 and 11 — I’ve helped with my share of school projects. But it’s hard to know how much to help.

Some of us with special interest in the Mendenhall House in Jamestown were talking recently about whether or not Richard had a gold mine.

I said I had never heard of it. Others said, yes, they were sure he did. We left it at that, but I’ve since realized that I had heard of it — at least read of it — and either forgot, or else it just never really got my attention.

When Lisa Kidd was born, everything pointed inward. Her legs turned in.

When she was 6 weeks old, her legs were put in casts, and she wore special corrective shoes for a while.

Her rib cage was pressing on her heart and lungs. When she was 3, she had surgery to correct this problem.

I installed it, I love it, and now use it all the time. I can look up any Bible verse, in any version or in any translation, quicker than you can say Deuteronomy.

Dream comes true for parade’s Santa

Cliff Snider has always loved Santa Claus.

The first time he was Santa, Snider was 15. He decided right then, he would not play Santa, he would be him.

Years later, Snider met Max Meeks — a WMFR radio personality who was always Santa in the High Point Christmas Parade — at a Rotary Club Meeting.

Dale Metz, retired Gateway Education Center principal, was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in a ceremony Thursday at Haynes-Inman Education Center in Jamestown.

The award -- the highest civilian honor bestowed by the N.C. governor -- was presented by U.S. Rep. Howard Coble.

Metz is an Air Force veteran, advocate, contributing author, actor and active community volunteer.

I regret that the rain kept me and a lot of other folks away from the Jamestown Alumni Association Barbecue on Sept. 24.

As always, it was held at the Jamestown Public Library, also known as The Old School.
