Please forgive me, but I was just settling in when my 14-year-old daughter informed me that the water in her shower is knee deep and not draining.

So after an hour of rigorous drain-snaking, here I am. But I’m not complaining.
I’m not allowed to complain.

Seriously.

The other night, my wife and I made a pact. We agreed to quit complaining entirely.

Marty Halyburton of Greensboro has become well-known because of her humanitarian work in Southeast Asia after the Vietnam War.

Her husband, Porter, was held for almost eight years as a prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnamese War. He was shot down Oct. 17, 1965, while on a combat mission in his F-4 Phantom jet, flying from the USS Independence into North Vietnam.

Mackay, multimillionaire head of Postal Telegraph Co., bought his first piece of land in Guilford County in 1903 and by 1905 had built Deep River Lodge, using plans drawn for him by the fashionable architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White.

Because we are a shoebox family, too, when I overhear people discussing shoeboxes for Christmas, I know what they mean.

Thanksgiving will arrive a bit sooner than usual for area foster families.

Friendly Hills Church in Jamestown will hold its ninth annual Early Thanksgiving Dinner from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Foster parents and their families from Guilford and surrounding counties are invited to the free dinner.

High Point delays vote on Market Overlay District

The High Point City Council continued a public hearing on the proposed Market Overlay District to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7 after receiving several comments and recommendations from close to two dozen public members Monday night.

Several council members were absent Monday night, so the council will set a date for discussion of the plan at the December meeting.

Several students and teachers hit the blacktop on Oct. 29 at Johnson Street Global Studies. Some walked. Some jogged. Some of them made the laps solo. Others chatted with friends.

Each week, 50 students and eight to 10 staff volunteers meet for an hour of education about nutrition, exercise and character building, then head outside for some laps.

My wife doesn’t slumber. I don’t slumber. The dog doesn’t slumber.
And, most importantly, the numerous teenage girls who are lying in sleeping bags on nearly every flat surface of our den certainly don’t slumber, or at least not for very long.
