Local high school to host theater festival

Last year, Grimsley High School’s theater students made the trek to Washington, N.C., to participate in the N.C. Theater Conference High School Play Festival.

This year, they won’t need to travel so far. Grimsley was chosen to host one of the 2009 Central Regional competitions, one of eight regional events across the state.

Rain did not stop the dedicated fans of local Revolutionary War legends Charles Bruce and James Gillies.

The large, old granite marker in their honor — in front of the Summerfield Elementary School — was rededicated Sept. 26, 86 years after its original dedication.

Completion of the original monument had been delayed about a year by similar weather.

Three northern Guilford towns head to the polls

Three northern Guilford County towns will select new town leaders Nov. 3, and Stokesdale will vote on liquor by the drink.

Stokesdale, Summerfield and Oak Ridge will elect new town council members, and Summerfield will elect a mayor. Stokesdale’s Mayor Randle L. Jones is running unopposed.

In Summerfield, Don Wendelken is challenging incumbent Mayor Mark Brown, who’s been mayor twice and served on the council three times.

Wendelken said one of his priorities as mayor would be to improve professionalism on the council.

“I will ... not let the council members conduct personal attacks on each other or on the citizens,” he said in a questionnaire.

Their mayor, Randle L. Jones, is running unopposed and they have one fewer candidate to choose from than they did a week ago.

Grimsley High School media specialist and part-time Greensboro Public Libraries employee Silvana Mazo had to drop out of the race for Town Council last week.
