Joyner and Irving Park students set records in sport stacking event

Seventy-six local students converged on Irving Park Elementary Jan. 21 as the school took on Joyner Elementary in the second annual Speed Cup competition between the two schools.

The collaborative event organized by PE Specialists from both schools, was the pinnacle of a Sport Stacking program integrated into the physical education curriculum of both schools.

More than two years ago, Sandy Neerman, director of Greensboro Public Libraries; Betsy Grant, the recently retired director at the Greensboro Children’s Museum; and I had coffee together to discuss a creative idea for a fundraiser — to do one together.

It was a novel idea, one that took little convincing. Thus, Three-G was conceived.

When Lisa Kidd was born, everything pointed inward. Her legs turned in.

When she was 6 weeks old, her legs were put in casts, and she wore special corrective shoes for a while.

Her rib cage was pressing on her heart and lungs. When she was 3, she had surgery to correct this problem.

The Greensboro Children’s Museum has been providing fun, informal educational learning experiences for children, their families, educators, students and out-of-town guests since 1999.

We are proud to be a popular cornerstone of the downtown Greensboro cultural district. The building is that undeniable smiling face floating in the North Church Street skyline.

Retired Gateway Educator Center principal honored

Dale Metz, retired Gateway Education Center principal, was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in a ceremony Thursday at Haynes-Inman Education Center in Jamestown.

The award -- the highest civilian honor bestowed by the N.C. governor -- was presented by U.S. Rep. Howard Coble.

Metz is an Air Force veteran, advocate, contributing author, actor and active community volunteer.

For a few hours on the afternoon of Aug. 25, Gunter’s Citgo in Northern Guilford County transformed itself into a fair of sorts.

“We just wanted a carnival atmosphere,” Leslie Gunter said.

For the fourth year in a row, convenience store owners Gunter and her husband Chris hosted Northern Day in honor of the first day of school.

HIGH POINT— At a September festival, the Friends of John Coltrane will give away four instruments to students who have a love of music but not the money to buy a saxophone, clarinet or trumpet.

Musicians in middle or high school may submit an essay by Aug. 26 to be considered for the giveaway at the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival on Sept. 3.

Last year, some northern Greensboro neighbors planted seeds in their community garden.

After months of watering and weeding, flowers, produce and friendships have spouted.

“There’s a real sense of community here,” Joyce Powers said. “We’re getting to know each other better.”
