An iPhone app that's great on the golf course
Image accompanying article

I've always wanted one of those golf GPS devices. But I can't justify forking out $400 plus for one of them.

Then along comes an iPhone app. One word: sweet.

Shotzoom Software's Golfshot: Golf GPS, which was released in August, promises to deliver all the bells and whistles you'd want in a rangefinder/GPS golf gizmo but for only $29.99. Of course you have to have an iPhone and you have to pay AT&T's monthly service, which ain't cheap.

But for iPhone owners who happen to be golfers, this could really save you some green.

The app shows you distance and layout, including how far you are to the pin, bunker and water carries, and layup distances.

Other features include scorecards, statistics, GPS aerial and list views and tracking the distance of any shot.

It has a catalog of 15,000 plus golf courses, including many in North Carolina. It has one of my favorites: Bryan Park in Greensboro (both Champions and Players courses).

Not perfect though. As noted in a review by About.com, the iPhone is not as durable as a dedicated golf GPS, which you can get wet, toss around and drop without worry. Plus it sucks a lot of battery life.

Having said that, About.com still gives it an impressive 4-1/2 stars out of five.

Customer reviews on iTunes were also on par with About.com, or 4-1/2 stars out of five.

Anyone out there used this? What do you make of it?

Lowes Foods drops Greenpoints for new program

You'll no longer be able to earn and redeem Lowes Foods' Greenpoints after Sunday because the grocery store chain is starting a new rewards program.

But your Greenpoints will still be good for two years.

The new rewards program, called Fresh Rewards, starts Monday.

Barbara Saulpaugh, a vice president of marketing and merchandising for Lowes Foods, said that the chain decided to stop honoring Greenpoints because many customers said that the customer-loyalty program was somewhat confusing, especially when they went to redeem points from their accounts, according to this story.
