We ran a timed mile in boot camp this morning. Mine was 13:30. I finished next to last. The last person has been running about four weeks. I’ve been running for two years.
I’m slow.
This writer addresses the matter of speed in his most excellent blog for Runner’s World. My favorite part: “It’s about neither positive thinking nor realistic thinking; it’s about doing the work and discovering who you are.”
I’m discovering that I’m slow, and I probably always will be.
When you spend a lot of time working on fitness, it’s easy to become a Type A Exerciser: Obsessed with performance. Constantly striving to improve. Always comparing yourself to others. Never stopping to enjoy the moment, or appreciate the positive benefits the activities can bring.
I don’t want to live like that, dude.
The Marathon Virgin ends his column with two beautiful questions posed to him by an exercise psychologist: “So exactly who are you big and slow compared to?" he asked. "And who cares?”
