'It’s very unintimidating to be in a group of women'

See Jane run. See a lot of Janes run.

“The name Jane to me stands for an ‘everywoman,’ " says Liz Lindsay, founder of the Janes on the Run Women's Running Network in Greensboro. “That is the way I wanted it. Out there, we are all the same. We are women who run and women who share some common bonds just because we are women. The ladies call themselves Janes, or they say, ‘I am a Jane.’”

And there’s a place for a Jane of any speed or ability to fit in.

“It’s very unintimidating to be in a group of women,” Lindsay says. “Most are around the same age (30s to 40s to 60s), most coming in not being athletes. We’re about fitness, setting personal goals, achieving those goals and being out there.”

For a fee, ranging from $115 to $185, Lindsay and her certified fitness trainers offer tailored training plans and coaching for women who want to build up to a 5K, 10K, half-marathon or marathon. A 6 a.m. running boot camp is going on through Aug. 27. There’s also a network of about 100 members who take part in socials and fitness classes and get discounts.

“The schools are educational and practical,” Lindsay says. “I have an education background, so I want them to learn as much as they can about running. There’s a different topic each week: running form, nutrition, preventing injuries, cross-training, running intensity. They get an email from me each week about the lesson topic. We meet once a week to run together and talk about the lesson and focus on the lesson. Initially what I do is an evaluation so each woman gets her own training plan based her on current fitness. They also have to run two or three times during the week depending on their fitness level.”

And after what has seemed like a summer pause, the running season will kick into a higher gear as the weather begins to cool. Lindsay will take a group to the Virginia Beach Rock ‘N Roll Half Marathon on Labor Day weekend, and several Janes will run the Salem Lake Trail 10K and 30K in Winston-Salem. Other school participants will aim for the Greensboro Gobbler on Thanksgiving Day or Resolution Run on New Year’s Day, both 5Ks. And other races in between.

“The ladies that do hook into it just get the fever and want to learn as much as they can and connect with as many runners as they can, on running Web sites, getting into all the gear,” Lindsay says. “A lot of our group does that. I do have more 30-somethings than I had in the past, and they seem to get into it a little bit it more and play around with it a little bit more. A lot of ladies keep their own blogs and journals. It’s a good core group that’s really gotten into it.”
