Updated at 5:25 p.m.

MEMORIALS

The memorial service for Greensboro firefighter and runner Will Caviness will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church at 410 N. Holden Road in Greensboro, according to the Professional Fire Fighters of Greensboro web page.

A Will Caviness Memorial Page has been established on Facebook.

FROM HIS FATHER

From an email exchange with Caviness' father, Lee:

"He was the picture of health, and we just cannot understand this. ... Will was a great young man and a real hero. You would have loved him, as does everyone who has ever known him. He is still inspiring people and doing good. ... We are totally devastated by this. ...

"Let's all keep remembering Will and that he had dedicated his whole life to helping others. ...

"When you run by Will's house and you see those Halloween decorations out, the hosts in the trees, the ''spider webs,' etc., Will did those, put them up. He always did Halloween big for the kids (his own and others). Will himself would dress up. Yeah, he loved life, loved children, loved his family, loved people and loved to help others and to make them happy the best he could."

DONATIONS TO IAAF BURN FOUNDATION

TRIBUTES

"I don't know Will Caviness -- I read his story online and have been deeply affected by it. I live in NYC and am running the NYC ING Marathon in November for a foundation which benefits firefighters across the U.S. I know the training it has taken me at my level (Will was elite in comparison) and can only imagine what he had sacrifice to meet his goal. I saw online how his fundraising has gone from 3K to almost 14K since Sunday -- which is amazing! ... I've exceeded my personal goal with the foundation I am running for -- and would like to ask if I can reach out to my friends and family (those of whom have supported and those of whom have not yet) and ask them to redirect their donations to Will and his family. I've been touched by his story and just want to help his family, if I can. I don't know how much financial steam is left in my friends and family but I would like to help. I really want to help as much as I can as Will's story has touched me incredibly." --  Ashling Farrell, by email.

"I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Our lives have been enriched by knowing Captain Caviness. Thank you for the dedication and courage you have showed us all." -- Station 1 B-Shift GFD, on Caviness' fundraising page.

"In memory of Will -- your fellow runners will always remember you. The New Albany Running Club." -- On Caviness' fundraising page.

"In memory of Will. I was proud to have you as a FF serving under me on Engine #1. You always made the sacrifice needed when the time arose over the years. Now you have made the ultimate sacrifice to benefit burn victims. Rest in Peace knowing that many will benefit from your gift and unselfishness." — Randy Brande, on Caviness' fundraising page.

"Alternating between crying and laughing over the memories of you, Sean, Billy and Mitch growing up. We are proud of you and love you. Bill, Sallie, Buckwheat, Mitch." — Bill & Sallie (Blazer) Caviness, on Caviness' fundraising page.

"I never met Will but I also ran the Chicago Marathon this year. I was touched by his story. My thoughts and heart go out to his family and friends." — Michelle Smith, on Caviness' fundraising page.

"I did not know Will, but am a veteran Chicago Marathoner and was at the 26 mile mark with my daughter where Will fell. We were devasted to hear the outcome. We need more folks like Will that work for a cause to help others. We are happy to contribute in his honor and wish all of the best to his family and friends. I will think of Will in all future races that I participate in." — Mike Lancioni, on Caviness' fundraising page.
