High Point police accepting Citizen's Academy applications

From a High Point police news release:

The High Point Police Department is accepting applications for their fall Citizen’s Academy, slated to begin Sept. 14 and runs through Dec. 14.

The fourteen-class session is designed to inform citizens on the police department and interact with its officers.

Classes meet weekly on Tuesdays at 6 or 7 p.m. and last until 10 p.m. No class will be held Oct. 19.

Through classroom time and hands-on exercises, participants will learn about the requirements of a police officer’s job, legal and constitutional guidelines they must abide by, and are given the opportunity to do a ride along with a patrol officer.

Participants must be 18 or older, provide a valid ID and have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions (in last 10 years for misdemeanors only and pass a brief background check.

Seats are limited to 20 participants and preference is given to citizens who live or work in the High Point area.

Deadlines for admission are Aug. 31.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is also offering its Citizen’s Academy with similar coursework, with applications being accepted though Aug. 23.
