Bellamy to retire within next year

Greensboro Police Chief Tim Bellamy confirmed Wednesday that he plans to step down within the next 12 months.

A retirement date hasn’t been set yet, but Bellamy said he intends to talk with City Manager Rashad Young about the decision in the coming days.

Bellamy, 50, has been chief since March 2007 and with the department since 1983.

Given today’s news, what would you like to see in the next police chief? Is there anyone in particular that you would like to see apply for the job?

A side note: we know the police department leadership over the past five years is a sore topic with many people. We appreciate your comments and opinions, but we will shut down the thread should the comments get out of hand through name bashing and derogatory statements. We are all adults here.

The next police chief should come from outside the department. That's the only way a certain segment of the citizenry will stop making accusations of corruption and race based decision-making. Chief Bellamy should be commended for his years of service to the people of Greensboro. Best of luck to him.

Our new chief must come from outside the department and preferably outside the local area. There is too much distrust in our police department at this time. We moved out of the area several years ago and came back to learn of this total chaos. We have a new mayor, new city manager, and its time for a new organization within our entire city management.

Yep time for him to go Get him out of here and take half of the department with him.. Greensboro City is corrupt I used to work for the city their is a lot of underhanded racism that was going on when I was there moved on to something bigger and better we tend to want to turn our heads on issues like that.. The Issue with Ray is kinda a gray area I think he was on to something but went about it the wrong way because one of the main officers who were in the middle of all of this used to rub elbows with some crooked people but he managed to play the game he was playing with out getting all the way dirty.. We need somebody like the Chief we had before Ray. Thats when GBP was on point they cleaned up a lot of troubled areas in the city. Took down a notorious gang that ran wild in Eastside Greensboro locking up more that 20 of its members for 15 years plus.. I say get Haggie from Davidson county.. I bet crime will decrease..

We already have the problem solver in the likes of BJ Barnes. Wrap the GPD into the Sheriff's department. BJ'll handle the issues and instead of having to be accountable to nine personalities with their own agendas he'll answer to only one: the Guilford County as well as GSO voters.

Personally I would like to see someone fresh, new, and ready to take on the task at hand. We need someone not so close to the previous issues the department has suffered in the past few years. However, I refuse to believe the whole police department is corrupt and for those who have served this community effectively, they should have a chance at the job. Yes, the Greensboro Police Department has made huge mistakes in allowing people to be removed based on pure speculation and no evidence, but that doesn't reflect on the entire department. Those were the acts of only a few.
