Graphs: Compare major crimes in Greensboro from 2008 to 2011

The Greensboro Police Department released crime statistics for 2011 just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Five of the seven major crimes — murder, rape, aggravated assault, larceny and auto theft — showed increases from 2010 to 2011, according to a news release.

There were slight reductions in the number of robberies and burglaries in that same period.

In the news release, however, the police focused on comparing the 2011 figures to the three-year average of the previous years. Most of the crimes were steadily declining until 2011.

Here's a visual presentation of stats from 2008 to 2011:

Violent crimes (basically crimes against people) include homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults.

It seems to make sense to compare statistics over a longer period than just one year to the next. Prosecutions, successful prosecutions, incarcerations and prison releases all impact annual crime numbers as much or more than police efforts alone, Also, over the past ten years, the population has grown in Greensboro by over 10,000, so per capita -especially over the last several years- the city is safer.

Where is the map showing where these crimes were committed?

@retiree, the Greensboro Police Department did not provide maps with the crime statistics Monday. This morning, I requested the maps, similar to those shown at http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/index.aspx?page=2001, through the department's public information officer, Susan Danielsen. I don't know when the requested maps will be released.
