One giant leap for kitty

Jet has been a bad kitty. But, strangely enough only when we’re watching.

Our computer desk is situated right next to our kitchen. Whenever Jet sees us sitting there, he’ll walk over and take a spot in front of the kitchen cabinets.

He’ll look up, squat down, and pounce on to the counter, then pounce again to get on top of the refrigerator where we keep our cereal boxes.

He’ll sniff around up there and then lay down, glaring at us, teasing us to get him. We get him down. I tell him, “No, this area is for humans only.” But then a minute later he jumps up there again.

He doesn’t appear to have any interest in eating what we have up there, but I still figure I don’t want a feline roaming around our food storage areas.

However he only acts this way when we’re working on our computer. I’ve never come home to find him up there, or evidence that he tried going up there. Likewise when I get up in the morning he’s almost always on the couch.

Is this a desperate plea for attention? I like to think we give him plenty, holding him while watching TV or playing fetch with him.

Sometimes when I see him assume his jumping position, I’ll throw a toy to try to distract him. He’ll fetch or maybe bat it. I look way. I hear his paws land on top of the counter and when I look over again he’s already made another leap.

The other day I had a baking sheet on the counter. He jumped up, hit it and it clanged to the floor. He ran off to the bedroom. Later that night he returned, eyed the counter, but this time decided to step away.

Did he learn his lesson?

Nah, a few days later, while typing an e-mail, I heard him shuffling our cereal boxes again
