It's shedding time

When I took Yoshi to his first vet appointment nearly five years ago, the veterinarian warned me that Yoshi would shed his entire coat twice a year. Yoshi is part Australian Shepherd and Husky, and it’s the husky in him that causes him to shed so much.

Well, it’s Yoshi’s shedding season right now. He’s been dropping clumps of fur around the house, and from what I’ve read, the shedding can take as long as three weeks. There is Yoshi fur everywhere.

So this weekend, I decided that Yoshi was way overdue for a brushing, which he LOVES. When he sees me get the brush out, he lies down on his side on the floor and he stretches out. This photo will give you an idea of the amount of fur he sheds. And this clump of fur is only from brushing one side of him! I didn’t even get to his backside or tail yet. Even though I’ve had him for almost five years now, I’m still amazed by the amount of fur this dog has. I told my husband by the end of Yoshi’s brushing that there was enough fur to create a new dog. I also wish that I knew how to sew because I think Yoshi’s shedded fur would make a nice, cozy sweater. : ) It’s so soft, like a sheep!

We have a rescued Boxer mix with short, very short hair. Twice a year also Tucker sheds enough to make two dogs. I never would have thought a short hair dog would lose so much hair and not be bald. Our other rescued dog a miniature Australian Shepherd mix, Bebe, has very long hair and sheds about a quarter of the amount as Tucker. Can't quite figure that out either. We cannot imagine life without these two wonderful companions.

Wow! I never heard of a boxer shedding so much. That's amazing that he sheds enough to create two dogs. : ) Australian Shepherds are so sweet, aren't they? Just this morning I was tying my shoes on the steps and Yoshi came down the steps beside me and nuzzled my arm, indicating he wanted a snuggle. Too sweet. Does your Aussie by any chance bark when people hug? Yoshi does that, and I've always wondered if it's his herding mentality coming out of him. : )

Wow, Greta, also a rescued Boxer mix, hardly sheds at all. It's just a few small clumps here and there. It's mostly noticeable on our clothes. But I would never classify her in the same shedding category as Cassie, who like Yoshi could shed enough to make sweaters.
