Throwing a wedding

Update: We've heard you, and we want to be inclusive. We are eliminating the requirement that the couple get a N.C. marriage license. Thank you for telling us what you think and bearing with us.

When you’re planning a wedding, you want it to be perfect – sparkling diamond, exquisite cake, beautiful ceremony and joyous reception.

The News & Record and Proximity Hotel want to help someone get that perfect wedding.

We are throwing a wedding for one lucky couple in the Piedmont Triad. Tell us what makes your love story special, and it could be yours.

Everyone else, you’re part of this, too. We want you to vote for your favorite couple.

When I say “throwing a wedding,” I mean pretty much everything, from the invitations to the dress to the ring to the cake to the reception. We’re even providing the honeymoon. You just need to get to the ceremony on time.

The co-sponsors are impressive:
* Schiffman’s Jewelry for the ring;
* Extra Ingredient for the wedding registry and china;
* Ashleigh’s Fine Paper for the wedding planning and invitations;
* Ollie’s Bakery for the cake;
* Dr. Mark Hyman for teeth whitening;
* Merle Norman for make-up;
* Dawn’s Bridal for the gown;
* Letia’s Bridal for the tuxedo;
* Plants and Answers for the flowers;
* AAA Travel for the honeymoon.

The Proximity Hotel will host and provide the rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony and reception.

Classy.

The rules are simple. Beginning today and running through Oct. 17, we are accepting nominations here. (The application process is online only.) Both the prospective bride and groom write their love story and answer a few questions.

You must be at least 21 years old, and you must be single. (Sorry, renewing your vows doesn’t count.)

By the end of October, a committee will narrow the nominees to five couples, who will then be featured in the newspaper. The community will vote online to select the couple that will win the wedding.

We’ll announce the winner Nov. 14. The wedding is scheduled for Feb. 5, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

So, tell us your love story and let us do everything else short of saying “I do.”

I find it somewhat offensive there is an assumption of a bride and groom. Any clarification on whether this opportunity is open to gays and lesbians?

Sorry, but a N.C. wedding license is required.

I've written a piece about the contest on my blog comparing this contest to one recently held by the N&O: http://www.pamshouseblend.com/diary/17381/ Was it a conscious editorial decision to restrict it to "weddings" and not open it up to commitment ceremonies, which would allow the contest to be inclusive? Since the services of the person performing the ceremony wasn't part of the prize, it renders the question of a civil, religious or symbolic ceremony moot.

Lots of things in life are offensive to people, but last I checked saying something that is offensive is not a crime. Some people might find your comment offensive, but you still have a right to your own beliefs.

Sodomite "unions" are not marriages anyway, regardless of what some activist judge says.

Very disappointing.

wow!! i think this is the coolest thing ever. especially in these tough economic times, the gift of a wedding ceremony and reception is awesome! kudos to the news and record, the proximity hotel and all of the other sponsors.

I hear you, Pam and ascensions. We and our partners talked about this issue as we were planning the wedding project. We knew it could be contentious. We decided to take a traditional approach to the wedding because we hadn’t done this before and weren't sure how everything would work. As part of that, we settled on following the state laws as it applies to marriages.

But you raise good points. If a same-sex couple wants to have a commitment ceremony, I encourage them to send me an email at the address on this blog’s home page and I'll make sure that the request will be considered.

Thanks, John. I think it's a matter of raising the issue and discussing openly what impact is of inclusion as we navigate social change locally. It's often less frightening to simply open up a dialogue and examining where small changes can make a big difference in perception of celebrating all of the Triad residents' business and participation in life in the region. I've updated my post, adding your comments to it.

So to clarify: a NC wedding license "is required" (as you say above) or is not (as you say here) in order to be considered for this contest?

John Robinson

At this point, it's required.

So, you say send an email, you'll ensure gay/lesbian consideration.

But, really then, not really...

Sorry to be so confusing. If a gay couple is interested in applying for the marriage, email me and we will talk. Right now, though, we're committed to throwing a wedding, following North Carolina law.

OK, so now you're saying that a same-sex couple that enters, will be "considered", but has zero chance of winning the contest because they cannot receive a NC marriage license? Come on, John, you cannot have it both ways. Please clarify.

We haven't changed the rules. We are open to hearing from and talking to people who feel they qualify under the rules except for the requirement about the valid N.C. marriage license. I can't say whether that will cause a change in the rules or not.

Absolutely outrageous. It's either open to same sex partners or not. I will be contacting the sponsors of the event to expose to their hypocrisy between the values they say their businesses hold dear and what this contest says about them sticking to their values or not.

Mr. Robinson, take a stand. Either the contest is open or not.
