Easley's hearing

Capital reporter Mark Binker has covered the State Board of Elections hearing into the affairs of former Gov. Mike Easley all week. (Easley is testifying today.)

Mark has been writing analyses off the hearings, rather than straight news stories because we think it is easier to sort through the testimony, put it into context and help the reader understand what's what. We are interested in what you think and whether you'd prefer the more traditional AP method.

Meanwhile, you can follow the hearings live here as Mark and others report via Twitter. Because there are different people reporting, you can read all the different perspectives.

If it contributes to your thinking any, I got a call from a reader this morning blessing me out for being snotty and saying that Easley was the best governor ever.

It's a slippery slope. I think Binker is a very good reporter (most of the time, the exception being an uncritical repetition of Obama admin talking points on stimulus spending), and he almost always does a solid job of selecting and offering a balanced perspective on politics. But the "memory loss" motif is straight up satire. Of course he's right; of course it's both predictable and absurd that politicians can't seem to recall information in a such a selective and self-serving way. And if you want to make fun of Mike Easley, then I'd hate to be the one to stop you. Still, "analysis" means here (as always) an editorial in the guise of a news story, and I'd just as soon keep them separate.

The analysis tagline does allow us to write headlines such as "Easley witnesses suffer memory loss" which described the testimony perfectly, but may have been disallowed in a straight news account.

I like to be a fly on the wall, and hear the Raleigh Mafia, discussing the N@O.
I all ready heard a lot of hits on the N@O.
Larry Leake* could prove to be a pest for the reporters that a been accused of not reporting the facts, in the past on Easily.
Now who the heck is Larry Leake, sounds like a funny name for someone that ratted out the Weasel.
Never heard that name to last night. Some one called in on a talk radio show, talking about the Weasel and all the facts that never appeared in the newspapers!
