A&T and Gucci

While Allen points to this thread about elephants at the zoo as an example of intelligent discourse, I point to this one about a rapper coming to A&T for homecoming as something else.

I'd bet that if Gucci Mane were coming to UNCG, the comments wouldn't reflect on slavery, racial genocide, the KKK and the value of an education at UNCG. But it bewilders me why A&T engenders such disdain among some commenters. Well, it doesn't bewilder me -- it is an HBCU -- but it saddens me. I suspect that none of the negative commenters has been on the A&T campus for years. Try it. It's a vibrant, good-looking place.

And reflective. Here is an example.

Then again, if it was UNCG instead of A&T, the visiting artist or entertainer would be geared towards alumni instead of the students whose fees paid for them to visit Greensboro, and it would probably be somebody who hasn't done something culturally relevant in over a decade.

I give A&T props for being ambitious enough to give their students - and our town - a night of entertainment by an artist or performer that young people actually listen to on the radio. These shows, which have featured such high profile black entertainers like Kanye West before he jumped the shark at this year's VMA's, generate a great deal of revenue for local businesses, too. Was Gucci Mane a poor choice? Perhaps, but it was part of the same ambitious tradition that has made A&T homecoming Greensboro's biggest event in the fall and I still admire the organizers for at least trying to do something big.

And you're right about A&T campus. Having walked across its lawns last week, it is good-looking and nothing at all like the perpetual construction zone I walked through while attending UNCG. People should visit the school's campus one day and maybe even watch a play by their theatre department. They won't regret it, as some of the best productions I ever reviewed were at A&T.

I guess in a perfect world, a prestigious school such NCA&T would have the community commenting on a story that outlined cutting-edge research that is being done at the school.

Instead, the University's news coverage revolves around their association with a rapper.

Good job A&T...way to perpetuate the stereotype.

Is this part of that "Aggie Pride" that I hear so much about?

We have waisted a lot of time, myself included, on how the ball has been has been dropped. Yes..... all of this shines a negative light on NCAT but dont forget that young people will learn from there mistakes. However they will continue to make them, that is part of life. Instead of being so negative with the comments from the past 24 hours , what suggestions can we make that will help them resolve this situation. There has been so much finger pointing that it is really irritated me and I'm sure others also. Overall we agree that controversy sells and gets the community talking. Legally what type of financial situation would this put the university in if they cancel the contract with Gucci man? If it is going to be a financial hardship to the university, then let the show go on. The show is not on campus it is at the colisuem. Lets turn this blogging around and find some solutions so that this doesnt happen next year.

Well, you've indicated "disdain"--or at least frustration and disapproval--of A&T on several occasions, mainly relating to its failure to share information. Is that because it's a HBCU? Because you're a racist?

Of course not. You're indicating disapproval of a behavior you judge negatively and that you link to A&T. Your paper frequently reports on matters (low passage rates of nursing students, financial improprieties, administrative infighting, and Gucci Mane, to name a few that come to mind) that engender, in many readers, similar negative evaluations of the institution. Gucci Mane, etc. gets more print at the N&R than stories outlining cutting-edge research being done at the university.

If you're truly saddened by readers' disdain, you may want to rethink your column allocation. Or you may want to rethink your sadness if the university's behaviors warrant disdain.

You're correct. I have been critical of A&T for its resistance in releasing information to the public. I have not connected those actions to the race of the majority of its students, to years of slavery and all the other assumptions and criticisms that so many of the commenters have made.

My point is that it would be nice to talk about the issue of whether the rapper is an appropriate act, rather than talking about everything else.

Mr. R u r right on target.

All universities have issues with alcohol, violence, retention and the list could go on and on. Why is there so much hate for A&T? If u dont like the place vow to do something positive instead of constantly lowering your selves to making it an issue always about race. That is not the main issue here. There r some schools that get more negative press than others. Lets note than no university is exempt from negative actions! All races enjoy rap! Let it go..............please.
