Why do you read it?

In the depths of the comments in this post about our ACORN coverage, a commenter named Interested leaves this question:

There are a number of posters who regularly complain about your (N-R) liberal bent. Why do they continue to read your paper, why not find one more to their liking? If I don't like the meals served in a particular establishment, I take my business elsewhere.

People read a newspaper for many different reasons. Getting angry at it is one.

But I'll let y'all weigh in.

Well, this assumes that there is "one more to their liking." There isn't--the Rhino is a totally different kind of animal.

Besides, the N&R's liberal bent is mostly harmless. Sure, we get the opportunity to read about:

a) any allegation from Nelson Johnson, no matter how preposterous or unsubstantiated
b) endless iterations of "Local Couple Installs Solar Panels"
c) Jeri Rowe trying to make us feel empathy for someone using tired literary techniques (although several good columns lately, I should add)

And occasionally the liberal bias--especially its refraction of everything through the prism of race (see Jimmy Carter)--leads to some bad reporting (see David Wray), whacked-out emphases (see TRC), or suppression of legit (mostly national) stories (see Edwards, ACORN, green czars) until cover is given by the Times or the National Enquirer.

But mostly it's harmless--a passive, slightly corrected version of the bias one sees at the Times. If you don't care about solar panels, it's easy enough to skip the article and avoid the Green Blog. (Which, incidentally, had zero comments last I looked. Obviously the paper believes that the community shares its lefty fascination with all things recycled, a belief I question.) If you're not interested in Nelson Johnson's recent abduction by White Supremacist Aliens, you're not required to read about it. And yes, there's a perverse pleasure to be taken in contemplating such matters.

In the meantime, the paper offers a lot of very good reporting at the local and state levels.

And despite that its editors and reporters are mostly Trotskyites, the press is essentially a conservative institution in that its stance toward government is skeptical and critical. (As opposed, say, to Pravda's place in Stalin's USSR.)

"Why do they continue to read your paper, why not find one more to their liking?"

I agree with brian444, the Rhino is a bit of a different animal. And I read both the N&R and the Rhino.
But if there were a newspaper in Greensboro that was fair and balanced I would no longer read the N&R. You have to admit the N&R does have somewhat of a monopoly.

There are times when the N&R have gotten it totally wrong (see David Wray), but instead of admitting their mistake they continued to stand behind a false story and a bad reporter. In no way has the N&R disputed the Jerry Bledsoe articles which tells the true David Wray story. It is obvious the N&R is still seen as having egg on its face from the David Wray story. Why hasn't the N&R told why Jerry Bledsoe's reporting is wrong (besides the fact that the evidence supports Jerry Bledsoe's account)? I guess the N&R just can't bring themselves to admit the Rhino does actual investigative reporting. And they also can't bring themselves to admit they were wrong.

I disagree that the N&R's reporting is "mostly harmless". I feel the N&R had a great deal to do with Greensboro losing probably the best Police Chief (David Wray) the city has ever had. And it was all because of poor reporting and false reporting from Lorraine Ahearn, who still works at the N&R. If I had gotten something sooooo wrong with my work, I would no longer have a job.

Beach, the David Wray story was not the first fabrication that the N-R published. Read this book by Jerry Bledsoe that exposes out-right lies published by and still defended by John Robinson.

I know that "overtaxed" isn't interested because he's been peddling that for awhile, but for those who want to read an independent review of that story, go to:

Explain to me John why your link is an "independant review of that story" and my link is biased.
All I ask is that people read "Death By Journalism?" and decide for themselves. If the book is full of lies then why not sue the author for slander if for no other reason than protect the integreity of the N&R?

John Robinson

Please note I didn't say your link was biased, although I think the book is. What I mean by independent is that someone with no connection to the newspaper, Randolph Tech, the author or the instructor came down and examined what happened and wrote about it. If you're going to recommend people read the book and decide for themselves, I am sure you wouldn't mind them reading the link I offered to lend more perspective to their decision-making.

I wouldn't sue because I don't believe newspapers that believe in the First Amendment should sue another publication.

"In no way has the N&R disputed the Jerry Bledsoe articles which tells the true David Wray story."
Why would the News & Record feel compelled to dispute an article written in a different paper? I don't think that N&R has a fascination with trying to discredit other media sources (like those other media sources have with the N&R).

Appreciate you guys commenting. For the record, we weren't wrong with our Wray coverage, despite what you and others may say. I just wanted to get that on the record. I' trying to keep this from turning into another discussion of a three-year-old story that has been discussed dozens of times here.

Sadly all newspapers in this area, are hard core left.
The NO sometimes reports the shams in Raleigh, only because Nifong peed in ther corn flakes.
The only reason, I am buying your paper now, is I post on line.
I think it would be wrong to not spend some money, if I do this.
Do you want us to quit buying your paper?

John Robinson

Of course, I want you to continue buying and reading the paper. I appreciate your sense of obligation, too, Doug.

I was posing the question "Interested" posed because the answers, I thought, would be interesting and that maybe I'd learn something.
