John Edwards as the baby daddy?

The National Enquirer reports that John Edwards is the father of that baby. (You know the one.)

The Charlotte Observer's Campaign Tracker makes note of it. An anonymous commenter, after first posting some untoward observations, questions whether it's still news.

Is it?

Don't know if the wire services will send out their own version of this latest exclusive by the Enquirer.

Friday update: The News & Observer reports no statement planned by Edwards.

What? JR... you're not laying claim to it? :)

Personally, I consider this nothing more than tabloid fodder. If he was currently involved in politics/the public eye, this would be newsworthy. But he really does appear to be a has been. So at this point, who cares? If he made a serious attempt to re-enter the political arena, then by all means, put the story out there. Until then, I don't need any more info about John's baby, Sarah's daughter's ex-boyfriend, etc., etc., from main-stream news sources.

It is news worthy because Edwards may have used campaign money to pay off or support his mistress. Which would also means he should be put in jail if found true.

Hooray! Beachwalk, we've found something on which we can agree.

If I recall, the NE broke this story!

It did, Doug. I thought that I made that pretty clear. No?

What I just saw on WRAL web site.
Edwards admits child is his.
In real life I could care less.
Now if you could do a story on how to putt better, that I would be interested in!
You did say that early.

Actually, I think the WRAL story said that an anonymous source said that Edwards will eventually say the baby is his during the Grand Jury investigation. May turn out to be true, but the sourcing so far is pretty sketchy.

My point exactly - the sourcing is sketchy, therefore should this be reported by WRAL and the N-R, or should it be left to the likes of the National Enquirer? I agree that the investigation into the use of campaign funds is news but the endless stories concerning sex lives, parenting, marital breakups, etc. has become tiresome. There was a day when one had a choice about such stories (buy the tabloid or not), but no longer. Now it feels as though every news source feels compelled to report on this nonsense.
