WITW: The Friday reveal

Boy howdy you people like yourselves some Beef Burger. Monday's WITW picture was indeed the West Lee Street landmark:

Steven Stein of Greensboro
John Stone of Greensboro
Jean Ann Anderson Wood of Eden.
Jennifer Wright of Greensboro ("It's Beef Burger……mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.")
Olivia Wyrick of Whitsett

Jean Ann shared a Biff/Beef Burger story in the course of two e-mails. I spliced them together into this account:

"My father, Sam R. Anderson Sr., worked in the maintenance department at UNCG (he retired with 32 years in 1986 and died in 2002), so his shop at the steam plant was just across the railroad tracks from the Biff Burger. We lived in a house at the corner of Highland Avenue and Oakland Avenue until I was 5, so I remember walking across the railroad tracks to the restaurant many, many times. After we moved to the country, we still came to town occasionally to visit Dad at lunchtime and sometimes we ate at the Biff Burger. While in college in the mid 1980's, it was a popular spot for burgers, shakes and fries. I've not been there in years — but like Yum-Yum ice cream and Tate St., it is certainly part of Greensboro's Americana."

If you read the above carefully, you'll notice that Jean Ann called it "Biff Burger." (So, too, did a few other people who e-mailed.) Turns out Beef Burger was once upon a time called Biff Burger, a fast-food chain that went the way of Burger Chef and Golden Skillet. Thanks to teh Google, I found this site about Biff Burger. (Click on the "Beef Burger" tab on the left-hand rail for a write-up of the local joint.) The guy in Pennsylvania who put the site together explains his Biff Burger obsession here.

Here's another look at the sign:

Here's Biff, er, Beef Burger itself:

Check back here Monday and I'll have another food-related picture for you. In the meantime, let's eat!
