Eight Guilford County high schools received $100,000 combined for participating in the 2011 Pizza Hut Invitational boys and girls basketball tournament, the Greensboro Sports Council announced Wednesday.
And after “lengthy discussions,” organizers also announced that they will not expand the annual tournament, formerly known as the Little 4. The eight-team field will remain unchanged for the 2012 tournament, as well.
Greensboro Day, Grimsley, Northeast Guilford, Northern Guilford, Northwest Guilford, Page, Ragsdale and Smith each received $12,500, an increase of $1,750 per school over last year. Including this year’s donations, the Greensboro Sports Council has distributed more than $1.2 million to the tournament’s participating schools in the last 13 years.
The sports council also donated $10,000 in scholarships and charitable contributions from the most recent tournament’s proceeds.
The 37th annual Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank is scheduled for Dec. 26 to 28 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
