More job cuts

GCS announced yesterday they're making more job cuts bringing the total to about 375. They've got about 200 jobs that need to be filled so the net loss could end up being about 100 or so jobs. Probably more when you consider some folks won't qualify or want those vacant jobs.
Mark Jewell, local president of the educators union, says he thinks the system is doing the best it can to find jobs for those being laid off.
If you're one of these folks and feel comfortable sharing your experience please do.

Affordable Tutoring (imported)

May 19, 2009 - 8:37 am EDT

I am not one of those folks who are employeed by Guilford County Schools at this time. How ever, I do teach some of them math and science. How oes the school system expect to cut staff, improve student performance while increasing student to teacher ratio?

I would like for you look at what I am doing to try and make a difference.

Math and Physics Club

A place where 6, 7 and 8 graders can learn age and skill appropriate math and science for $10.00 and hour per week for up to 3 hours a week. Programs for algebra I and II students, trigonometry and geometry students as well as calculus I, II and III students are available too, although prices are higher, see www.affordabletutor.org for details. At a time when our public schools are suffering budget crises and performance woes, would not it be great to have a place where students can enrich their public, private or homeschooled math and science educational programs for $10.00 a week? Classes are limited to 3 students to maximize the student teacher experience. Classes are taught by an engineering physicist whose experience includes NASA Ames, Naval Surface Weapons Research Center, Fermi Laboratory, two NASA Mars Mission Research Centers and 27 years experience teaching 6 grade through adults as old as 62. All programs are self paced and guided study. Each program is designed to identify and address weaknesses, develop interest and skills as well as challenge each student’s limits through independent study skill development. If you know of some one who can benefit from this opportunity, pass the word.
