Plans for Halloween

The spookiest day of the year is almost here — no not election day, Halloween. Since so many of you are parents I was curious what you'll be doing Friday night. I grew up down east "in the county" as we like to say, so we didn't really have a neighborhood to speak of. My folks would either take my brother and me into a few neighborhoods in town to go door-to-door or we'd have a party at our house.
So what about you folks? Do you send your kids around the neighborhood or do you look for an alternative? Do any of you let your kids trick-or-treat without adult supervision? Is there anyone who objects to the celebration and what do you tell your children?

OK - I'll bite.

I now know that there are teachers employed in our schools who are nothing more than Halloween characters and who need to be let go.

I think you should run a story about the worst teachers in Guilford County Schools. We could all provide examples and then the final winner could be chosen and offered a job elsewhere.

It's fine to let kids go door to door--as long as you don't live in the Emorywood neighborhood of High Point. That Dot Kearns is the SCARIEST character around, and she can scare the yell out you! EEEkkk!!!

Also, it's been tradition for the last couple of years for the Chalkboard blog to run her famous Halloween photo! C'mon J.Brian, get with it! :)

Dear Anonymous:

Maybe you should teach in Guilford Co. to see how "easy" it is. Between the paperwork, state/federal mandates, the constant bashing by the media, and the wonderful children who misbehave who come from the worst homes, 50% of teachers don't last beyond their fifth year. Now THAT'S scary!!

The reason for my frustration is that my son is an Advanced Learner who is very, very quiet. My wife and I are very involved in his school and provide ALL the supplies to the teachers when they send home notes for pencils, tissues, etc. His teacher is incompetent and down right cruel. This teacher should never be put in front of a class of children.

I understand the frustrations that teachers face, but they should appreciate the smart, well-behaved children that they have and not do all they can to hurt them.
