One down in Senate District 28

John Wayne Welch decided to run for the state Senate in District 28 "because I was really ticked off about what's going on in Raleigh," he said at a candidates forum in High Point this evening.

But that was as long as the heated rhetoric lasted.

Welch had just heard the opening statements of fellow Republican contenders Jeff Brommer and Trudy Wade ... and was impressed.

"After listening to our two candidates," he said, "I am well satisfied with them and I will probably withdraw."

Although he kept his seat at the dais in the High Point City Council chambers for the duration of the 90-minute event, he didn't participate in any further discussion.

Which put him just ahead of the fourth GOP candidate, Robert Brafford Jr., who didn't attend.

The seat is currently held by Democrat Katie Dorsett, who is not running for re-election. Evelyn Miller and Gladys Robinson are the Democratic candidates.

This evening's forum was held by the High Point Republican Party. Candidates for state House District 61 and Guilford County commissioners District 2 also took part. There are no Democrats running in those races.

Doug I need help. Cal Cunningham's statement regarding Burr and "feeding pigs at the government trough" leads back to quotes from the N&R. I thought the statement was made by a SC politician. It would be out of bounds if Cal is making this up. My question is Did Burr get on the senate floor and make this outrageous statement?

I had not been aware of this. Here's a Web site where you can see Burr's comment (and some commentary by critics) and decide whether Cunningham's statement was fair.

My evaluation would be that Burr chose his words unwisely.

Thanks Doug. I see the "trough". The issue challenged was illegal parents. The USA cannot afford to medically treat the world for free. We are running on a credit card now. I would love to give the world health care. Our health system is so broken long-time citizens get axed and billed without notice.

No doubt this is the fastest surrender in Republican political history since France surrender to the Germans in WW2

It was a remarkedly candid moment, as if Mr. Welch were saying, "These are better candidates than I am. Why am I running?"
