Republicans would be stupid to exclude unaffiliated voters

Are North Carolina Republicans really stupid enough to bar unaffiliated voters from GOP primaries?

(Here's Mark's story on the issue.)

They might be that dumb, but I think wiser heads will prevail.

Here's the math, courtesy of the State Board of Elections:

Registered voters who are Democrats: 2,764,947

Registered voters who are Republicans: 1,931,641

Registered voters who are unaffiliated: 1,379,834

To compete with Democrats, Republicans need to attract most of those unaffiliated voters to their candidates. They won't do it by telling them, "Sorry, you can't vote in our primaries because you're diluting our product."

The poor logic of the GOP purists' argument here is plain: They aren't going to field successful candidates in general elections if those candidates can't appeal to independent or moderate voters. So it helps them, not hurts them, to get input from those voters in their primary.

It sure doesn't help them to drive unaffiliated voters to the Democrats' primaries.

Yes, I understand doing so could mess with the Democrats. Maybe that's part of the scheme here. More independents voting in Democrats' primaries will alter outcomes there, probably to the detriment of liberal Dems. But wait a minute. That means Democratic primary winners would be more moderate or centrist, and thus more likely to win the general election.

Uh-oh, Republicans. You could make a very bad mistake here. Better wise up.

This may be a ploy to lose state and national elections. Purist are fewer in number than they may believe.

You are exactly right about the purists. Not many, but they do seem to make a lot of noise.

Doug, the Republicrats are long past stupid! Look at the disaster what they nominated in 2008. Look at the joke they nominated in NY23 this year!

Everyday they look at the polls showing independent/unaffiliated voters deserting the Demo-Rats in droves. They saw these same folks supporting Christie, and McDonnell by more than 2-1, and they come up with this lunacy. They must have place a wager on the other guys!

I'd prefer that BOTH Parties quit holding these Beauty Contests and go back to the Party Bosses and Smoke Filled Rooms. Open elections have not exactly resulted in the BEST candidate being the Party's Choice; plus the Tax Payers are footing the bills for these so called elections.

Why not let the parties do what they want as long as it does not involve tax money? If 80% of the people aren't voting anyway, why spend the money?

Now that's a contrarian idea. I'd miss the presidential primaries, which are terrifically entertaining.

Have you ever noticed that the far left extremist are always blasting Palin, she ran Alaska a lot better than Hunt, Easley are Perdue has run the state of NC.
No one can tell,me one thing wrong with this lady!
Except she drives wacko liberals crazy.
Mack is more into, Pelosi -.
Beck has his own opinion, what's wrong with that.
Plain and Beck draw large crowds wherever they go.
Beck stays sold out.
Some folks want on one side news like you get here!
That 's why Fox News roars and left wing newspapers are dying,
Most folks want to read and hear both sides of the news.
I see Obama stimulus plan is working well in NC, Dell gone.
Sony in Raleigh on the way, Marlboro in concord gone.
What Obama doing? Touring the world telling folks how bad America is!

The state Republican Party's executive committee killed this dumb idea Saturday. Unaffiliated voters are still welcome in GOP primaries.
