Easley or Campbell: Who's telling the truth?

"There's a lot about that that I wouldn't know."

A typical statement by Mike Easley during his testimony this morning before the State Board of Elections.

The question was about campaign donations routed through the party, allowing supporters to give more than spending limits would permit.

Like several of yesterday's witnesses, Easley experienced some memory problems.

So many flights around North Carolina during his 16 years in statewide office. He can't recall all the occasions when McQueen Campbell ferried him here and there.

But he remembers very clearly Campbell telling him he was reimbursed for every one of them -- in contrast to Campbell's testimony Monday that he wasn't paid for any of them.

The legal issue is whether they amounted to unreported campaign contributions.

Campbell's not an "imbecile," Easley said. He knew he was supposed to send bills for any services he provided for the candidate.

No, he didn't appear to be an imbecile.

The question is, did he appear to be lying?

Because both he and Easley can't be right.

What I saw of Campbell's testimony Monday seemed sincere.

"There's a lot about that that I wouldn't know."

Possibly. But in the end, it was his campaign and it was his responsibility to see that appropriate measures were taken to comply with campaign finance laws. Let's face it, he has a legal background and would know as much about what was expected of him and his campaign as any candidate, probably more than most. My question to him would be "Why didn't you know? Was it because you didn't want to?"

With the cost of fuel, he had to have an inkling that all these flights had to be pushing this contributor to the limits of allowable contributions.

As Easley explained this afternoon, he was busy with his full-time job creating the best pre-K programs in the country and the nation's No. 1 business environment.

No doubt the Campbell kid is bought or in fear by federal authories with his testimony. Easley Defense and the State Democrat party lawyer today presented a excellent legal defense in their final closing today. If Easley is guilty of anything, It is being a poor judge of political friends and just being stupid, as some us have suspected for a long time........Bob Hall of Democracy of North Carolina who bought the complaint against Easley is really a poor judge of the legal law that has been set in place by State leg...If the board of elections goes for a criminal case against Easley, It will go nowhere since the DA of Wake County will have recuse himself in the end..I predict the Board will not go for the Criminal case.......Easley battle will be with the feds over the State mess with his wife.
