Coble says Gingrich can't win in November

No surprise in Howard Coble's announcement today.

I mean, if you're holding a press conference at your campaign headquarters, chances are you're going to run a campaign.

I think the 80-year-old Republican will have his toughest race since the 1980s. He's got new territory in the redrawn 6th District, it leans a little less Republican and opponents likely will make his age and health an issue.

I asked Coble after the presser about his presidential preference. He's endorsed Mitt Romney.

That puts him in the company of lots of Republican representatives who served with Newt Gingrich in the House but are NOT supporting him.

Coble said he thinks Gingrich can win the GOP nomination -- but not the general election.

I tried to pry more out of him about why not but without success.

Coble also could not remember whether he voted for the House reprimand of Gingrich on Jan. 21, 1997.

He did.

It seems like all the folks that were in the "car" when it was driven into the ditch don't like Newt today.

No doubt he was so confuse at that time, he thought he was at the Confederate Congress in Richmond and cast the final vote for Jeff Davis to remove himself as the leader of the Confederate government in exile
