Since I’ve last checked in, the House has passed its version of the budget and the Senate has rejected it. That means the thing is officially headed for a conference committee where House and Senate negotiators (with input from Gov. Bev Perdue) will try to negotiate a final deal.
The Senate has named its conferees: 29 Democrats and 3 Republicans.
There are 30 Dems in the Senate but Senate President Pro Temp Marc Basnight did not name himself to the conference committee. (Typically, the Speaker doesn't appoint himself to the conference committee either. However, the pro-temp and Speaker usually play a pretty big part in wrapping up negotiations.)
The three Republicans are Sens. Stan Bingham, Fletcher Hartsell and Richard Stevens. Those three members of the GOP are known for voting with Democrats on occasion, particularly on budget bills.
