Walmart's unbeatable prices claim scrutinized

You've probably heard Walmart's claims of "unbeatable prices." That includes matching prices of any local competitor’s printed ad for an identical product.

The chain also makes the case in a commercial that on average you can save $700 annually if you spend $100 a week at the supermarket on select grocery items (excluding fresh meat and produce).

Truth or fiction?

The National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus examined those claims. That followed a challenge by H-E-B Grocery Company, L.P., a competing food and drug retailer.

It concluded Walmart could support its unbeatable prices claim, noting "all price-matching programs have terms and limitations, many of which cannot reasonably be expected to be listed in a disclosure," according to a press release the advertising division released today.

But it did recommend Walmart "modify its advertising to make its disclosures substantially more clear and conspicuous in its printed and broadcast advertising and on its in-store signage."

The advertising division also recommended Walmart discontinue its “annual savings” claim, although Walmart disagreed the claim could not substantiated.

Walmart, however, says it will take those recommendations into account regarding future advertising.

So, do you get your groceries at Walmart? Are the prices there better than competitors?

I do about 90 to 95 percent of my grocery shopping @ WalMart - I like the 24/7 hours, the big wide aisles, the large selection of grocery prodcuts, the always low prices, the abundance of parking - and especially the fact that WalMart does not have those silly and irritating plastic discount type cards - not requiring one of those cards means everybody gets the same low price, card or no card - plus every time I go to WalMart I see someone I know - old friend, church member, relative, work mate, neighbor, former boyfriend - I always enjoy seeing folks I know at WalMart - but the best thing about WalMart is that they hire people that otherwise might not be able to get a job anywhere else and that helps all of us. But the very very best thing about WalMart is the low low low prices for prescription medicines - my mama's oldest sister starting getting all her prescriptions at Walmart and saved many dollars compared to where she was getting her medicines before. - all those senior citizens living on fixed incomes can really save money by getting their prescriptions filled at WalMart. God truly blessed us when he put a WalMart in our community.

I grew up in a tiny community in the 70s -- population 2,000. Main Street had a a mom and pop butcher, an A&P, and a Victory grocery store, also a mom-and-pop druggist, two department stores, a shoe store, a bakery, a men's and women's clothing shop ... etc. you get the picture. These stores also served surrounding rural families. Nobody was getting rich, but private enterprise made everybody a good living. Today, all those shops are shuttered and the town is virtually dead.

Now everything is consolidated into big boxes for the benefit of Wall Street, and communities everywhere have been shattered. Wal-Mart is the poster boy for how capitalism turns everyone into hogs -- now we know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

And I forgot to mention the convenience of one-stop shopping -

While I understand that shopping at Walmart can be affordable and convenient, you must also consider the great damage it has done to us also. Walmart is responsible for driving several companies out of the United States for making their goods and that is not only loss of good jobs but also more items being shipped from abroad. Also Walmart has a history of discriminating against women and minorities. They also have a problem with paying people for the time they have worked. There are a ton of lawsuits against Walmart because of their poor treatment of their employees. Walmart gets a very large part of their stock from China, which is NOT an ally of the US and is a country that has no laws about how to treat employees or about pollution. They are supporting a country that goes against the equality and freedom that we are supposed to stand for in the United States. I could go on and on about the issues with Walmart. So really I think any convenience or money saved by shopping at Walmart pales in comparison to horrible issues that they are the cause of. Martin Luther King, Jr. said that we need to think more about the betterment of everyone, not just ourselves and I think that standing up to Walmart does just that.

Wonder were Target, K mart, and other box stores, get their stuff from?
I checked 6 items in these stores and Wally World. They all came from China!
Seems, Obama does not have any trouble, getting money from China.
I got a lousy sit of tires from Wally World, before I could raise heck.
They gave me my money back!
No one is required to work at Wally World!
If you think the unions give a damn about people.
Wonder why they support illegals, working in this country?
That cut wages! I know the answer.

your comment makes no sense. what does this issue have to do with unions? it seems like you have no idea what you are talking about. also this has nothing to do with Obama, so stop trying to blame all your problems on him.
