The Front Pew

Is this how early Christians lost part of its history?

Church burns ... Bibles. The pastor says the King James version is the only accurate text. When I read this the other day, it got me thinking about all the previous strikes against Christianity --  from within.

Christian fundamentalists are always a bit of a puzzle. The key feature of all that I've ever encountered is their determination at exclusivity. "Only OUR version of the Bible is correct" is only one of many ploys I've seen over the years. This group totally fails to understand the inherent problems with ANY supposed revelation from the divine to the human via writing: languages are INACCURATE by their very nature. Translations only exacerbate the problem. So while it appears that this group is doing some rather interesting marksmanship with their toes, it's hardly a very remarkable event.

I witnessed a fundamentalist passing around a rattlesnake. He demanded Kissing a Viper was the way and the only way to purification. I passed and did not drop money into his bucket (NC ,1971 Avery County mountains).

Just a thought.
As an Evangelical, I have problems dealing with the Fundie's insistence on pounding in/on/with the Gospel. Most of my brothers and sisters prefer to try to live in a manner which reflects their love of Christ. Doesn't always work, but hey, it's a worthy ambition.
Gotta disagree with nemo0037 on the revelation of the Word of God through the Bible- the God of Abraham is truly in control. It is inconsistent with my observation of the translations from Hebrew and Greek through today's Word. I personally use the NIV which these folks take issue with. Regardless- if you think God has lost control of his media coverage, then I'm not sure why you even care. He either was, is and will be, or he isn't there at all. I know he is. That you apparently know otherwise won't change the outcome when we are both long gone from this orb.
God bless you with His Grace and Mercy.

It's hard enough to take what you say seriously, even without such an oxymoronic screen name. Care to offer any proof as to the statement, "the God of Abraham is truly in control"? That would be a first, incidentally.

Exactly what clue do we need to get?

No proof for your statement.
Thanks for playing.

The "King James only" people are a crank fringe group which most fundamentalists find more embarrassing than enlightening. I read some good refutations of their nonsense from evangelical publishers back when I cared about such controversies. These are people terrified of change and uncertainty, and they don't want their lives confused by alternate translations; plus they've grown up with the KJV and its stately sonorities, and they love it, so they cling to it to simplify things. After all, fundamentalism is essentially simple-minded, reducing the boundaries of knowledge to somewhat manageable proportions. KJV-only people are not a threat because they'll never be numerous enough or taken seriously by most evangelicals.
