1 in 4 Muslim -- and not geographically where you might think

Nearly one in four people worldwide is Muslim -- and they are not necessarily where you might think, according to an extensive new study that aims to map the global Muslim population.

Should this change the way we observe holidays and observances in this country?

It is well known over 1 billion people in the world are muslim. USA allows all followers of faith to observe their own rituals. Schools do not have Christmas break or Easter break. Schools have winter break and spring break. The only holiday feast day is Thanksgiving. Labor day is for admiration of work. Veterans day is to honor service. Memorial day is to honor bravery and ancestory. Fourth of July is Freedom. Eid is one day in the lunar calendar. School children and pregnant women are exempt from Ramadan fasting. Yom Kippur students are and have always been allowed an excused absence. Lunar calendars are hard to keep up with. Hindu and buddist calendars full of holidays and are everchanging and harder to figure out. To each his own religion holiday. Agnostics may want an official holiday, what is next ?

It doesn't matter who practices what or how many there are of any organized religion. Our public calendar should respect the needs of customers. Period. If I don't think it right to buy liquor on a Sunday, then I won't buy liquor on a Sunday. If I am supposed to fast during Ramadan daylight then I don't care if you open an all-you-can-eat pork buffet next door. Honor your religious committment and don't eat it. If team sports must be scheduled on the weekends and my child makes the team, then I don't care whose Sabbath it is. Play, or don't go out for the team. And as for missing to school to celebrate whatever, fine. Make up the work. Or don't go to public school. Sick, vacation or religious holiday: it's all the same. You missed school. Stop expecting anyone--let alone everyone--to change just because it makes your life somehow more convenient to worship something that's pretend to begin with.
