Is there a justification for torture?

And does one's faith have anything to do with it? See today's News & Record about the stand some local Presbyterians took.

Will Bill Clinton and Janet Reno be charged for the torture they inflicted upon the Branch Davidians?

Using physical force to obtain one's goal is not compatible with true Christian thought. Torture, used by any US entity, does not show anything good about the US. For any Christian group to say that the US is a "Christian" nation and then note that torture is "fine" is anethma!

Monica, why do you feel it necessary to try and turn the subject aside with a red herring? Just answer the question, based on your religious beliefs.

My secular beliefs are still being formed, but so far as I can tell I know of no reason why the harm done to our nation by torturing captives could ever be offset by possible benefits from information obtained. There are many places where this is debated, and my judgment of the debates is no -- there is no situation where torture can be justified.

Certainly we should avoid extreme and prolonged torture, per se: but agressive methods, even painful ones, are sometimes necessary when the life and death of many, even millions, of innocent human lives are at stake. Such methods might be construed as "torture" by the bleeding heart pacifist set, but not to be agressive in protecting the innocent from murderous thugs is clearly dereliction of duty for our military or intellignece forces.

It's easy to kick back in one's computer chair and spout off pacifist diatribe; but all reasonable citizens have no trouble seeing the consequences of such fantasyland thinking. The trouble today is that we have shunted one of the above libs into high office, along with his ritinue, and may pay a terrilbe price for doing so.

Ah, the true source for wanting/supporting torture; President Barak Obama. Now the picture is much clearer.

Gadfly, I'm concerned about the consistent tone of your posts. You seem to mistake a hoo-rah, shoot first and hand out Bibles later attitude with Christian witness, but do you realize that you don't sound very Christlike to the unconverted? What I hear is not "come unto me, all ye heavy laden," but "all you liberal, pacifist types had better start agreeing with me and Rush, shape up and buy a firearm if you want to be saved." Your gung-ho sabre-rattling may make you feel all righteous and strong, but I doubt that it will win any souls for the Prince of Peace. What are you so afraid of? Haven't you read that "if God is for us, who can be against us"?

Torture or don't.
Just stop pretending it has no consequences.
And stop pretending anyone else understands your twisted justification and 'special circumstances.'
And stop pretending you are a Christian if you support torture.
As evidenced by the Bible, only the Christian god is allowed to torture his creations.
