Justin Conrad, who heads a chain of local seafood restaurants, is getting ready to run as a Republican in the newly created 27th Senate District. From a news release Friday:
"Greensboro, NC – Justin Conrad, the third generation President of local small business Libby Hill Seafood and a conservative Republican, will formally announce his campaign for State Senate District 27 next Tuesday, January 17 at the High Point Libby Hill Seafood restaurant. Senate District 27 is a newly created State Senate District entirely based within Guilford County and currently contains no incumbent."
So far as I know, Conrad is the first Republican (or Democrat) to announce a bid for the district. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more people jump in, particularly if U.S. Rep. Howard Coble goes for another term in Congress.
The 27th was created from parts of Davidson-County-based Sen. Stan Bingham's district that used to reach into Guilford County and parts of Rockingham-County-based Sen. Phil Berger's district that used to dip down into eastern Guilford County. It shares many features with Billy Yow's county commissioner district.
The district trends conservative and is probably a friendly home for any Republican elected there.
