Bracy out of marathon trials with injury

Summerfield's Addie Bracy, an alumna of Northwest Guilford and North Carolina, won't compete in the U.S. Olympic marathon trials in Houston on Jan. 14 because of an injury. But she'll still get another shot at Olympic trials this summer in Eugene, Ore., where she will focus on the 10,000 meters but is also qualified in the 5,000.

Bracy, a volunteer assistant coach in the UNC running program, is recovering from a femoral stress reaction.

"We caught the injury pretty early (about three weeks ago) and originally planned to race on it," Bracy writes in an exchange on Facebook, "but decided that with five more weeks of high-mileage training to go and a 26-mile race, we thought the risk of it progressing to a full-blown fracture was too high. I'm in my second week of no running and just started cross-training. I am hoping to be back running in another two weeks or so."

Bracy, who tweeted recently that she ran 4,554 miles in 2011, qualified for the marathon trials with a time of two hours, 44 minutes and 34 seconds, or 86 seconds better than the required 2:46.

Bracy won't make the trip to Houston and instead will watch from afar as former Tar Heel Shalane Flanagan tries to win one of the three slots available for the Olympic Games in London.

"With her talent level and work ethic, I would say that she is a given to make the team," Bracy writes. "I would be shocked if she finishes outside the top three."

NBC, locally on WXII-12, will offer two hours of same-day marathon trials coverage at 3 p.m. Jan. 14. The men's race will start at 9 a.m. EST, with the women following 15 minutes later.
