House Speaker Thom Tillis took his town hall meeting show to High Point Thursday night. When I spoke to him afterward, I asked about plans to override Gov. Bev Perdue's veto of the Racial Justice Act repeal (link). Tillis sounded uncertain, saying that potential dates for the session would be between Jan. 4 and Jan. 7.
As for whether the General Assembly would actually attempt an override:
“I don’t know," Tillis said. "We’re counting votes. Quite honestly I don’t know that we have the baseline to do it ... Now that we know we’ve got the veto, a lot of things will relate to, 'Do you support the override and are you going to be here.' Most people were thinking we wouldn’t be back until February.”
Should the General Assembly decide not to attempt an override in January, they could send Perdue a letter signed by a majority of members of each house saying they don't want to come back. Or they could come back for a skeleton session, park the veto and adjourn without taking a vote.
