Caviness 5K on Dec. 10 to benefit family

Andrew Egbert wanted to help the Caviness family, although he figures they didn’t want a taste of his cooking.

“But I’m pretty good at putting on races,” says Egbert, a veteran runner and triathlete.

So the Cavinesses’ friend is organizing the Will Caviness 5K Family Run, scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 10 in Greensboro. The event, with a $30 entry fee, is a fundraiser in which all money will support the family of Will Caviness, the Greensboro firefighter who died at the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 9 and left behind his wife, Jenny, and his two young children.

The race will start and end at Fire Station 49, at 4302 W. Friendly Ave. The loop will take runners along Pebble Drive, down Cascade and through Brown Bark Park.

The field of more than 100 participants includes Robbie Perkins, who is being sworn in as mayor Tuesday. Egbert is hoping entries will top 200 by race day.

Costs for police, insurance and food have been donated; On the Mark Sports’ Scott Bassett will time the race; and firefighters will provide hot chocolate and water. After the race, younger runners and spectators will be able to take a close look at a fire engine.

“When Will passed away, I was thinking about something we could do to help raise money for Jenny and the family,” Egbert says. “It makes sense to do a run for Will, and it’s an easy way to get a lot of community support. If Will were around, he’d support it if we were doing it for someone else.”

Sign up for the race at sportoften.com, or contact Egbert by email (aegbert@reynolda.com) with more questions.
