The Chalkboard

How are classrooms looking?

Budget cuts are tricky for reporters. There’s the obvious stuff; a board cuts X number of jobs. That we can see and write about and discuss the potential impact.

But there’s the less obvious stuff. A cut here, a cut there and it might not show up in the big picture but in the classroom it turns out your kid’s class can’t have a pet rabbit this year – or something to that effect.

So with a week of school under the belt I’m curious what you parents have seen at your school. More kids in the classes? Fewer resources? Have they cut extracurricular programs.

Tell us about it here or drop me a line at brian.ewing@news-record.com.

Majority of industries cut in a down economic cycle. Great time to cut the fat. Get rid of some of the unneccessary layers of mgmt downtown. As a young lad in the public school system I don't ever recall an assistant principal at my school until High School. Too many chiefs, not enough Native Americans.

Off topic. I'm amazed there's not a major media org broadcasting the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon on labor Day in our area. The lack of sensitivity this area of NC shows toward an icon of this great country that will honor it's 45th year running is appalling.

1.Teachers purchase 90% of their own supplies.

2. If you want readers then...
Get the data on the "One Size fits All" Paper Bubble Events" that costs taxpayers millions and millions of dollars.
The curriculum needs to be diverse so that students will learn skills that will help them live a very successful and happy life.

All people need more than a High School Degree but not all people need to go to a four-year academic college.

"Different Strokes for Different Folks"

The news reports day after day that if you do not attend a four year academic institution that costs thousands of dollars then your job is not important.

It is sad that we make students feel as if the only job that is respectful is a job that requires a four-year degree.

Vocational requires smarts that most book people are not equipped to handle.

Vocational yields excellent jobs as a skilled worker is very hard to find.

Vocational is very much a part of a self-sustaining society.

It is nonsense to expect everyone to be a scientist and I can't help but believe that someone, somewhere is receiving a kickback for demanding "The one-size fits all curriculum"
