The Inside Scoop

A gun-waving whoopsie

Tom Green, one of the organizers of the "Bring Back the Constitution" rally held in Greensboro earlier this month, sent along an apology about one of the speakers.

In case you missed the story, folks from all over the southeast came to Greensboro to celebrate their Second Amendment right at the Guilford Courthouse Military Park, which, thanks to a recent federal law, allowed handguns and rifles to be openly carried.

The organizers went to some lengths to ensure that everyone was well-behaved -- even reminding folks not to litter -- since this was a unique opportunity to hold this kind of event in public. Rally invitations included lengthy rules of engagement, including explicitly laying out how rifles and handguns were to be carried.

Speaker Dan Eichenbaum, a congressional candidate, apparently violated those rules, by waving his handgun during his speech.

"This was a serious mistake, as it was a clearly stated rule for the rally that all sidearms were to remain securely holstered at all times, and the last person I expected to break that rule would be one of the guest speakers, especially one that had been running for a North Carolina Congressional seat. You can't be at a rally protesting others not adhering to the law of the land, while breaking them yourself," Green wrote in a letter to the News & Record.

Green went on to apologize to Greensboro Police, park rangers and others who attended the rally. He wrote that Eichenbaum would not be speaking at future rallies.
