Animal-rights activists blast governor

I believe I'm right in saying Bev Perdue is the first North Carolina governor who's had a Facebook page.

It's part of her commendable commitment to more openness in state government.

Unfortunately, some people are badly abusing the opportunity to communicate with her through this forum.

Animal-rights activists are blasting Perdue's Facebook page with angry, hostile and hateful comments. They want her to stop what they see as inhumane euthanasia practices at an animal shelter in Robeson County.

They may have a just issue, but this kind of invective is way out of line:

"Good afternoon fascist pig! Did you gas anything this mornign, or jam it in the heart? Cruella Perdue"

"How many are on the list today Bev? When was the last time you went to these shelters Bev? What are you plans to rectify this situation Bev? Is an animals life that meaningless to you Bev?"

"DO YOU HAVE A HEART???? We do, and we are sick of all the animals being tortured in your state...they are SO CUTE - have you looked at Petfinder to see them? Well, look quick, because they kill them before we can get there to save them."

"Lock Your Doors North Carolina!!! The Psychos BastardsThat Murder Innocent Animals Could Be Coming After You When They Finish Murdering All Of The Innocent Animals In The Shelters!!!"

Some, maybe most, of the people posting comments appear to be from out of state. One identified herself as being in the United Kingdom. Another urged a boycott of North Carolina.

They vow to keep it up until action is taken.

Is this the new lobbying? Respectful language would be more effective.

Otherwise, Perdue might be the last governor to venture onto Facebook.

(Tip to Dome)

Addendum: Here's a little bit of context for what's going on, and probably the origin for the Facebook attack.

I am one of the many posters on Governor Perdue's Facebook page that is from the UK. This issue of the state of the shelters in North Carolina has been bubbling up for MANY years now as rescues from all over the US have been trying in vain to save many of these animals from gassing and heartsticking - deemed inhumane by many veterinarians.

I can only apologise to Governor Perdue for a minority of people posting nasty comments and personal attacks on her social media page. I applaud Governer Perdue for having a Facebook Page - but it's pretty useless, unless the comments posted by concerned citizens (that got Gov. Perdue in the position that she is in) are heard and addressed.

This matter has been swept under the rug for far too long.... and in defence of the emotionally charged people posting to her site - I think it would only make for FAIR journalism to post this link to the article that broke that has sparked all of this:

Thanks for your comment. Inhumane treatment of animals anywhere in North Carolina should be brought to public attention. I am sorry that the rudeness of some has cast all in a bad light.

There is nothing inhumane about the current methods of euthanasia being used in North Carolina. Animal control facilities have personnel cross-trained in both use of injection and use of gas chamber. Making blanket statements that gas chambers are inhumane is absolutely wrong. It is NOT humane to wrestle a terrified feral cat or aggressive dog to a standstill in order to euthanize by injection when the animal can instead be placed crate and all into a chamber and avoid human contact. However, animal rights zealots find it easier to criticize and spread misinformation.

Really Doug, what could be more rude than inflicting your Brittish Opinion on North Carolinians/Americans? If not for us, she would be writing her posts in German!

Doug

I wouldn't sell Winston Churchill and the RAF short. They kept the Germans on the other side of the Channel.

Without the U.S., it's the French who would be speaking German.

Then keep your nose across the pond, you have problems enough in your own Country without writing about probelms in the US that dont' even exist. This is a work of fiction, it's a planned strategy, and all across NC H$U$ deciples are holding Fiction Writing 101 workshops!

"There is nothing inhumane about the current methods of euthanasia being used in North Carolina."

You've got to be kidding, right? You actually think stuffing an animal into a gas chamber and killing it slowly with gas is HUMANE?? That's the same treatment the Nazis doled out -- was that HUMANE?

People with your mentality are the biggest part of the problem in stopping animal abuse. I thank God every day for all the volunteers and rescue groups we have...they're the ones who have to deal with that kind of callous indifference daily.

Your dramatization of the process is far from accurate. Your attempt to humanize animals shows you to be a rabid Animal Rights Extremists, and removes any credibility you might have had.

March 11, 2010 - 1:55 pm EST

I am far from a "rabid Animal Rights Extremist", just a pet owner and volunteer with one of the many local rescue groups. Nor was I "humanizing animals", just stating a fact. You might want to take a look at your own "rabid" comments on this blog - stating that the entire story is a lie is a bit much.

Magnus

March 11, 2010 - 2:13 pm EST

Your comparison of euthanasia to animals to the crimes against humans by Nazis is where you attempt to humanize them. You probably don't even realize the true intent of the groups you're associated with. It all sounds good to "save the puppies" the mobilize people who's hearts are bigger than their brains to do their dirty work without even enlightening you to the ultimate goal. Yes we are fighting back, and fight hard, but we can play any game now that we know the rules.

The goal of the group I volunteer with is to save animals from being abused, used in dog fights, starved and left for dead. It is also to educate people on the need for spay/neuter and proper care for animals. That seems to be the goal of every group I've dealt with.

I'm curious as to what you think "the ultimate goal" is -- does decent treatment of animals somehow threaten you in some way? Do tell.

Magnus

March 11, 2010 - 3:07 pm EST

The ultimate goal of PETA, H$U$ and many of it's sub-groups is "Total Animal Liberation." Many of the flunkies doing the grunt work aren't even aware that the work they do is just to make the organization look good. Their real money is spent on lobbying for legislation to remove our rights to own, breed and eat animals. This smear campaign against NC Shelters and attack on the gas chamber as a method of euthanasia is part of their self stated stretegy of "incremental legislation." One step at a time. They use video of animals euthanized 15 years ago in a Shelter and antiquated gas chamber that have long since been demolished, they lie, they instruct their flunkies to lie in letters to the editor of newspapers, and on blogs and Face Book, and all the bleeding hearts like yourself who want to "save the puppies' come a running swallowing it hook, line and sinker.

I certainly can't speak for PETA or the HSUS and I don't agree with their methods, nor have I ever supported either organization. A blanket statement lumping all rescue groups under the same banner is beyond ridiculous and is an insult to every rescue group and volunteer in this area. You clearly have your own agenda and can't see any other viewpoint no matter what facts are presented. It's difficult for me to believe that anyone could justify the abuse of animals in any way but if that's what you choose to believe, so be it.

Doug

March 11, 2010 - 3:53 pm EST

As someone trying to maintain some neutrality here, I have to say I don't think it's fair to connect someone who simply wants to reduce or eliminate the euthanization of animals in shelters to PETA or other groups with similar agendas.

It appears this discussion has attracted individuals with interests, motivations and points of view across a wide spectrum. I don't see that everyone here is at one extreme or the other.

Magnus

March 11, 2010 - 4:36 pm EST

It has been established that the NC Coalition for Humane Euthanasia is part of the A.R's self stated strategy of incremental legislation, this is a step toward their ultimate goal of "Total Animal Liberation."

Magnus

March 11, 2010 - 4:35 pm EST

Absolutely, my agenda is to preserve the right to own, breed and show pure-bred dogs, cats, and to eat what I choose. I absolutely did NOT lump all Rescue Groups together. The Rescue movement in this country was founded by Pure-bred breeders, and pure-bred Parrent Clubs contribute more towards Resuce the rest combined.

If this is not part of your agenda, why would you support these lies being spewed on FB? The NC Dept. of Agriculture has already inspected Robeson County and found nothing like what was described. In fact, they regularly inspect this and all Animal Congrol facilities. You did swallow this bait, hook line and sinker, just like I said and without ever questioning the validity.

Magnus

March 11, 2010 - 4:38 pm EST

I see the view point of the NC Dept of Agriculture who inspected this facility and found nothing like has been written. This sort of mud-slinging won't stop until people like the author are bank-rupted in court. I hope the NC Attorney General is reading!

No doubt about it! The Governor did go a little far when she said that the Killer Whale at SeaWorld should be Waterboard..........

Magnus

March 10, 2010 - 4:36 pm EST

I believe that was the whale's 3rd human victim. While we are concerned about the whale's well being, he has drawn 3 notches on the bottom of his pool. The Whale should be put down, it's as simple as that!

Doug

March 10, 2010 - 4:49 pm EST

After the first or second, the people should have gotten a little smarter.

Having these whales do tricks is stupid.

I've been in the elephant barn at the N.C. Zoo where those big guys stay when they're not on exhibit. It's like a maximum security prison. There is no direct contact between keepers and elephants. Doors open and close mechanically. Medication and veterinary treatment is administered through the bars because these animals are huge, immensely strong and not entirely predictable ... just like killer whales.

It would be better to simply develop a monthly birth control pill for female felines and canines. Heart worm prevention was started by the great work of Ciba-Geigy. At first there was a hugh daily pill. Today the prevention is in a monthly dose. Heartstick is no more cruel than to die neglected from heartworms. Start a cry for prevention and not just spay and neuter. Cry for pharmarcy affordable control. Raise money and research and demand control. Free pills to all poor should be a goal also.

Doug

March 10, 2010 - 3:25 pm EST

My dog loves heartworm pills. She should -- they're expensive! But better than the alternative.

I will ask my vet if he has a fund to help pay for heartworm pills for patients who can't afford them and, if so, contribute a little.

But, how many pet owners never bring their pets for annual veterinary checkups?

Thank you for the editorial. The abusive comments of animal rightists to Governor Perdue are nothing new. These comments appear on many other forums. When at a loss for words and a logical argument, it seems to be easiest for people-hating animal activists to resort to name calling and even death threats.

Magnus

March 10, 2010 - 3:49 pm EST

All euthanasia methods currently used in NC are human per the NCVMA and the AVMA. Science and experts have spoken. Let's give credit where credit is due and applaud Gov Perdue for not giving these radically extreme eco-terrorists the time of day. People are opening their eyes and see them for what they are!

I hope everyone will keep it civil.

Sorry Doug, but there has been nothing civil about the attacks these eco-terrorists have inflicted on the rights of Americans, and I truly resent any Limey sticking her nose and bad teeth into our business!

I seriously have issues with the postings on this site... I have not personally attacked anyone and yet am being racially attacked for being British and having concern for another countries animal welfare. This just goes to show what is wrong with the planet as a whole and how people are treating each other, the animals we live with and our lack of respect for anything other than ourselves. I hope the moderator of this site has the common decency to remove these disrespectful and small minded comments.

You are welcome to comment on this site, and I appreciate the tone of your statements. Thank you.

I am trying to allow wide latitude in expression but have removed comments that cross my arbitrary line into incivility and will do so again to the best of my ability.
