I believe I'm right in saying Bev Perdue is the first North Carolina governor who's had a Facebook page.
It's part of her commendable commitment to more openness in state government.
Unfortunately, some people are badly abusing the opportunity to communicate with her through this forum.
Animal-rights activists are blasting Perdue's Facebook page with angry, hostile and hateful comments. They want her to stop what they see as inhumane euthanasia practices at an animal shelter in Robeson County.
They may have a just issue, but this kind of invective is way out of line:
"Good afternoon fascist pig! Did you gas anything this mornign, or jam it in the heart? Cruella Perdue"
"How many are on the list today Bev? When was the last time you went to these shelters Bev? What are you plans to rectify this situation Bev? Is an animals life that meaningless to you Bev?"
"DO YOU HAVE A HEART???? We do, and we are sick of all the animals being tortured in your state...they are SO CUTE - have you looked at Petfinder to see them? Well, look quick, because they kill them before we can get there to save them."
"Lock Your Doors North Carolina!!! The Psychos BastardsThat Murder Innocent Animals Could Be Coming After You When They Finish Murdering All Of The Innocent Animals In The Shelters!!!"
Some, maybe most, of the people posting comments appear to be from out of state. One identified herself as being in the United Kingdom. Another urged a boycott of North Carolina.
They vow to keep it up until action is taken.
Is this the new lobbying? Respectful language would be more effective.
Otherwise, Perdue might be the last governor to venture onto Facebook.

Addendum: Here's a little bit of context for what's going on, and probably the origin for the Facebook attack.
