Heroines and gumbo

This past weekend, my wife and I took our 5-year-old to see Disney's "The Princess and the Frog."

My daughter sat riveted. My wife laughed openly a few times. I was reasonably entertained.

I was aware of the bayou hopping adventures of the film's heroine. I expected the usual magic, music and occasional adult humor. In short, I knew I wouldn't be bored. After all, Disney sets the bar high and rarely fails to disappoint.

What I didn't expect was this particular fairytale heroine's dream. It wasn't a prince or a castle. It was a restaurant. A restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter in the roaring 20s. So the film was filled with lots of references of beignets, boudins, jambalaya and, of course, gumbo - all set to a jazzy soundtrack.

The film was released before Christmas, so it's old news. But not for us. As Mardi Gras approaches, the screening was timely. So it was no surprise that I found my foot tapping and my mind thinking about the Big Easy menus some of our area restaurants will be rolling out in the next two weeks. Check out what some of them are offering tomorrow in Short Orders.
