Speaker Hackney responds to GOP health care plans

Republican plans to resist individual mandates in the federal health care reform bill (click here) drew a response from House Speaker Joe Hackney, a Chatham County Democrat.

“Well, I assume it’s another political event not a substantive legislative event,” Hackney said. Were Republicans serious, he said, they would be working through the committee system rather than holding news conferences. He also added that the political value of opposing health care/insurance reform could be completely diluted by the fall elections.
