Advice for State's new chief

Congratulations to Dr. William Randolph "Randy" Woodson, the newly appointed chancellor at N.C. State.

He comes from Purdue University, where he's been executive vice president for academic affairs and provost.

Now, some advice:

Don't take any phone calls from Mary Easley.

Beware of trustees whose political connections are better than yours.

As a horticulturalist, give some thought to "safe tobacco."

Don't let that crowd in Chapel Hill push you around. Think of them like the Bloomington bunch.

See if you can bring Matt Painter with you.

Any State grads have some serious tips for the new guy?

(Oh, wait. That last one was serious.)

Good luck prying Painter away from his alma mater where he has quickly become a hero of mythic proportions. Or at least he will be if the Boilermakers make it to Indianapolis in April. I can't see any incentive for him to leave that job right now.

As for Woodson, he appears to be a very good choice for N.C. State and I hope he lives up to his billing.

You have to admit he would more than live up to his billing if he did bring Matt Painter with him.

Does Painter know that Everett Case was from Indiana?

I would hope so, considering Case is still a legend there. Winning four state titles is no small feat (well, at least it was when the tourney meant something), nor is being elected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of fame.

Incidentally, my first varsity wrestling match was in Case Arena -- a crazy sight of a high school basketball gym. It was also the home court in that great Shaquille O'Neal big screen flick "Blue Chips."

Not a grad, but I have some advice: Beware of Free Market strangers bearing gifts, because they may ask for too much in return. Like steering your curricula in a certain direction, or funding clubs where they can place one of their own as an "advisor":

BS! Let's hope he takes a lead in growing massive Hemp fields to pay off the State of North Carolina debt!
