Greensboro Rep. Howard Coble, a Republican, was featured in a CBS Evening news piece on Congressional pensions. The main point of the piece was that taxpayers are still paying pensions for Congressmen who have been convicted of wrongdoing. However, Coble is the sympathetic figure in the piece. And unlike the miscreants featured in the story, he agree to talk to the reporters.
Coble, as you may or may not know, is one of only two sitting members of Congress to have declined the pensions. He has told me on several occasions that it was not one of his more financially savvy moves. However, as he explains in the video, he doesn't think the taxpayers should have to foot the bill for his retirement. Coble, by the way, is 78-years-old and says he'll run for re-election next year.
