Mr. Cope's, executive director of SEA-NC, comments that the policy is all sticks and no carrots. Yet my understanding was that the policy will cost $xxx/mo. If an employee wishes to receive a reduction for being a non-smoker or having a healthy BMI, they are then subject to periodic random testing. If that is not a carrot, what is? Nobody is forced to be tested. They are only tested if they seek the discount. This is no different from one of our own policies. My spouse, a former smoker, had blood testing to verify there was no nicotine present. In addition, while it is not possible to determine an exact BMI merely by looking at someone, this will truly only affect those who have a borderline BMI. Some people will clearly be within range, some will clearly not even be close. This move is not meant to embarrass anyone, but is offered as an incentive to make healthier choices and save the state money on health care costs at the same time.
