Having narrowly lost two years ago, Marikay Abuzuaiter is taking another chance for a City Council at-large seat.
Abuzuaiter got into city politics two years ago to fight a proposed increase on the license fees for businesses. As the owner of several small businesses – convenience stores, a restaurant and rental proerty – Abuzuaiter said she will work to keep costs low for Greensboro companies, especially those that are fighting to survive the dismal economy.
“I can bring the voice of the small business to City Council,” she said on a recent Saturday interview at the Green Bean before she went campaigning through downtown.
Abuzuaiter said she is a unique candidate because she has lived or worked in each of the city’s five districts.
“I truly believe I am the only candidate who can say that," she said. "It gives me a pulse on every different district. I hear from everybody.”
Abuzuaiter said the city should consider a local sales tax to raise revenue and should keep the White Street Landfill closed.
The candidate, a member of the City’s Human Relations Commission and the International Advisory Committee, said the council members should act professionally.
