Vote 2009

Meet the candidate: Danny Thompson, at-large

In a sea of candidates, with myriad issues, Danny Thompson is promoting himself as the “common sense,” “no agenda” candidate.

Thompson owns a family-run senior care business, Comfort Keepers. So he’s got the business background – without having a personal financial stake in the decisions the City Council makes, Thompson said.

“People say it’d be nice to have someone up there who doesn’t have a personal agenda,” Thompson said.

A father of four children ages 13 and under, Thompson said he would work to build relationships with other council members so that they can work better as a team and set the direction for the city.

He said the elected leaders need to build more trust with the community.

Thompson said he is a fiscal conservative and a proponent of a zero-based budgeting.

He is also in favor of looking for ways that the city and other municipalities can combine services to save money, perhaps on solid-waste disposal.

Thompson said the City Council needs to take care of both its businesses and its people.

He is in favor of the city creating a program to offer loans to small businesses that would add more jobs.

Let's not forget that one of Thompson's platform issues is "Continued funding for the Greensboro Police Department Gang Unit". Working out in West Greensboro by Guilford College, I'd like to know what Thompson knows about the gang squad and gangs in general? Mr. Thompson, what exactly is your knowledge of this issue, and why should people trust your knowledge about it more than your opponents? Is your proposal for the gang squad really more of the same? What sort of conduct by the gang squad would you hold up as a model for continued behavior? Seriously, Mr. Thompson, I would like your honest opinion on this issue. What is your stance, especially in light of the press conference held today by Jorge Cornell and former gang squad officer AJ Blake?

The candidate with no agenda? I don't think so.
