The Chalkboard

Coaching policy approved

The school board approved a policy Thursday night governing who and how folks coach. This policy and another governing student athletes are a direct result of several athletics-related investigations conducted this year, most notably the probe into Northern High School.

The coaching policy has changed from its original version after a vetting period where folks like you had a chance to weigh in. The biggest change is that coaches will be allowed to coach the same age group outside of school. This was forbidden in the first proposal but caught a lot of flak especially from coaches outside of the big three sports whose club teams are typically more competitive. Some mentioned were Lacrosse and soccer.

Coaches will be allowed to work with those teams and coach for a school, they’ll just have to write up a disclaimer saying they did. They’ll also have to notify the athletic director and/or principal if a kid they coached outside of school moves to the school.

You can review the entire policy here. Once you do come back and let us know what you think.
