Election strategy 101, Part II

Even though there's been little public comment among local bloggers on the city council candidate who told us he wasn't going to talk with us, there apparently was discussion and counsel given behind the scenes. I wonder how that went.

In any case, the candidate spoke with us today. Our list of the candidates and their background is more complete now. Good for citizens trying to make a decision.

Update: Darn it. I guess I wasn't direct enough. Can one of the bloggers who reportedly advised the candidate or the candidate himself tell us about it?

Wednesday update: Roch Smith took umbrage at my use of  "reportedly" above. He defines "reportedly" as meaning it needs to be published somewhere. I define it as meaning that it needs to be reported, and reporters reported it to me. But whatever. I am happy to join him in a pledge not to blog about something in which I have do not have primary and direct knowledge of.

Ben and I talk on the phone sometimes. Recently we talked about filling out the N&R form -- pros and cons, role of the press in a campaign, etc. One of our less entertaining conversations, actually. Apparently he decided to fill it out.

I noticed after jumping several flaming hoops that the comment registration process concluded with a question about how I wish to receive email from the N&R. If there was an option for "I don't want to get email from the N&R, thanks," I didn't see it, but that is my preference.

Thanks, Ed. It seems like such a natural discussion for the blogosphere. I was surprised when we heard that bloggers were advising Ben on the topic, but no one was writing about it.

Sorry you had such trouble with the registration system. Wish some of the commenters on the letters blog had the same trouble.

I'm pretty sure that you have to opt in to receive any e-mails from the paper, but maybe it is opt out, but it's been a while since I went through the process. I'll check.

I created a new address to see what would happen. Again, sorry you seemed to have trouble. To me, it was pretty simple. Anyway, the registration says this about your e-mail: "The e-mail address is not made public and will only be used if you wish to receive a new password or wish to receive certain news or notifications by e-mail."

I guess Ben's short-lived disinterest in an N&R survey was bigger news at the N&R than elsewhere.

When I see "reportedly" I think it means "as reported elsewhere." If I heard something, I'd say, "I heard..."

Roch seems to have set the defaults on his blog for umbrage.

It wasn't particularly big news here. I was just curious at the reticence because there seems to be so much interest about interaction between the newspaper and bloggers.

I am bemused at the parsing of the language, as opposed to the blog post's issue about a candidate's shift of opinion.
