Perdue reaches across party lines for judicial appointment

I'm a couple of days behind on this, but kudos to Gov. Bev Perdue for appointing Eric Levinson to the Superior Court bench in Mecklenburg County.

What's so notable?

First, Levinson is highly qualified. In fact, he has served on the N.C. Court of Appeals.

He resigned in 2007 to take a U.S. Department of Justice position in Iraq, advising that country's judicial system. Perdue gave him appropriate recognition for his service to country.

Finally, although North Carolina's judiciary is nonpartisan, Levinson happens to be a Republican. Perdue, a Democrat, reached across party lines to choose a good judge for this post. That's a positive step toward taking partisan politics out of our courts.

July 3rd, beware that a sole district elected judge will be in charge. She won her election in Nov. was sworn in Jan. and went on sick leave. She had just graduated from law school and passed her board exam a few years earlier. I hope everyone is out of town Friday if they need judicial review.

Today was the furlough day. Friday's a holiday. Any disasters in the Guilford County courthouse?

Good for Eric! Has it ever occured to you in all of the years of young Eric legal career, he has never been on the payroll in the private sector or in private practice.......It always amazes me in this depression with tons of lawyers out of work, some folks are just plain political lucky with State funded campaigns.

The state does employ a lot of lawyers. Judges have a tough job but someone has to do it.

And some want to be judges a lot more than the voters want them to,

That is like Mark Stanford saying he has to do the job no matter how many mobs want his neck?

True! That is why legal establishment always picks the candiate of their choice whether the people like it or not!
