Recipe for success:
* One dose of dirt cheap.
* Sprinkle in a generous amount of convenience.
* Mix in tremendous ease of use.
Put it in the oven. Remove. Let it cool for a minute. Then serve.
I've always thought Redbox's DVD-rental kiosks did a great job following that recipe, so it's not surprising to hear the hugely successful Netflix DVD-by-mail service is starting to worry it might be upstaged.
How well is Redbox doing? It's opening an amazing one kiosk per hour. More than 15,400 vending machines and counting distribute discs you can rent for a buck including lots of places in the Triad such as supermarkets and discount stores.
Not perfect by any stretch. I've always thought the choices at Redbox were lacking compared with Netflix. But you can't beat the price. Plus it's great when you're suddenly in the mood to watch a movie. (Yes, you can instantly watch movies via Netflix's partnership with Xbox Live, which we sometimes do. But the movie choices are also poor.).
