Personally, I feel very disappointed in this soldier. He presumably took an oath (naming his god as witness, I expect) that he would follow the orders of the US military. Then he turned around and tried to violate the very first general order given in his theater of service.

The article doesn't mention if the soldier faced any sort of punishment for attempting to disobey the order to not attempt to convert anyone. I should think he ought to have gotten something, but one never knows, these days.

I lived in Afghanistan for over two years before the Russian invasion and the genocide of the Aghan society. Today the madrassas have overtaken the words of Mohammad. It is fearsome now to even debate Bible Torah or the Koran. My time in this beautiful country was one of peace. All my counterparts knew I was not Muslim. But they went out of their way to point out I was ok due to Mohammad knew of Jesus, the Torah and we all believed in one God. If Prophets could figure this killing out I want them here now. The Taliban will slit the throats of a Christian now. It was not that way before. Afghans are good people their heritage goes back 5000 years. Zoroastrian, Persian thought was peaceful. Buddist thought was peaceful. Alexander the Greek even married an Afgan, the most beautiful woman Roxanne. Ghegis Khan destroyed universities and plundered.
If soldiers really want to help Ahgans take the time to understand the crossroads of the world and respect their suffering and learn their history. They are good people and need our help to rebuild their orchards and gardens.

I can think of no way to vitalize the opposition and endanger American troops in Afghanistan than trying to turn the fanatics of one religion into fanatics of another. Not that mass conversions are likely. But, as I know from personal experience, fundamentalism turns people into idiots. A broad river flows peacefully, but the narrower its banks, the fiercer its flow.
