To answer your question - right now I'm worried about changing vacation plans for the week of June 13 - I guess the system doesn't mind if the kids go to school until July - I think they're just trying to make a point that they don't like the state mandated start date of August 25.

Take your vacation. Like someone on the other strand posted, after EOGs they will just be watching movies, reading, having parties and recess. I don't think your child will have any live long negative effects from missing the last day or two of school.

Anonymous - not so easy. The high schools schedule their final exams up until the last day of school - EOG's are one thing - final exams in high school is another.

I forgot about that. In that case, maybe the students will have to do make-up days on Spring break (where they can be "sick") or Saturdays. I would write the BOE and Administration with my concerns about extending the school year into the next week.

Burlington Alamance will have a make up day this Saturday - that's the smart thing to do.

if I remember correctly the bus drivers have a 'no saturday' thing in their contracts, I think GCS looked at Saturday's a few years ago and couldn't do it. I could be wrong.

I too am going to write all BOE and ask that HS exams be completed the week ending June 12th.. then if students want to come okay, if not okay also. The family sometimes has to come first. Also there are make up exam days, for kids that are sick etc, maybe the 15th could be that day.

All,
According to the school system bus drivers do not have contracts but they are hourly employees and a Saturday make up day would put them into overtime. Since they’ve put the budget cuts switched OT to comp time the idea isn’t real popular.

Guilford County Association of Educators President Mark Jewell, who sits on the calendar planning committee, said while some might like the Saturday make up day the majority of parents and teachers out there would not.

As usual, Debora has a common sense approach. Taking from spring break as the BOE had done in the past could also work for parents. I'm sure teacher who have already planned some trips may not like to, but it beats going into summer break. Are there any more school holidays that could be make-up days?

thanks for checking on that. I knew that there was something about bus drivers- glad you found out the real facts.
