I thought the reason that we have the Academies was that they had a small environment and that they could be more successful? How many students are at these schools, does anyone know?

The reason we have "academies" is to attract literate kids from other schools over to a low performing school. It doesn't work. Instead of just "fixing" a school, our system concocts "schools within a school" and then applies for some grant. It has a two-fold hope, get free money, get white kids. Sorry if that's too blunt for some but I've been watching this system for a long time and that's the plain and simple truth. And for some more blunt truthfulness--it doesn't work.

I thought the reason for the academies was to take the low performing kids out of the "big school" and put them into an academy. That way the "big" school can make AYP and the Academy fails.

Isn't that what Central did? Didn't they move the low performers over to the "Academy at Central"? Central then made AYP, but look at the "Academy at Central's" scores.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe that Dr. Becoats made some noise with a paper or article in which he advocated for "leveraging" middle class white students by moving them to low-performing schools to bring scores up. Unfortunately, in Guilford County the demographics seem to work against this, as there are fewer and fewer middle class whites to leverage, and more white parents sending their students to private schools or Early College or one of the Middle Colleges. Also, NCLB insists that each identifiable group has to be making appropriate progress, so a really strong showing by any one group won't be averaged to make the whole school appear better.

The middle class have been leveraged to death in GC.

Is Dr. Becoats saying poor minorities can't learn? Why does he need more white students to "fix" some schools.

I feel this message is negative and appalling to the black community.

What would Obama think? Better yet, WWOD?

Obama has already shown what he would do. He's paying $29,000 per child, per year for a nice private school. I can't say blame him.

Most of these schools are rooted in the black populated areas of the County. I expect that there be a sharp improvement in the coming years with the election of Barack Obama.

No more excuses.
Anyone can be sucessful in this wonderful country of ours.

Gob Bless America. A new day dawns.

A day of no more!
No more!

I have heard that Deena is in Washington although I do not believe that she will be an Obama girl for very long.

Too much personal responsibility!
